Andrzej Majer, the book’s protagonist, checks himself into a psychiatric ward for three months, feigning paranoid schizophrenia. The only people aware of the research being conducted by this young doctor are his boss—Professor Walas—and the head of the hospital where the protagonist will be staying—Dr. Ziemiński. From the very first day of his stay, Majer begins to doubt the point of his research—the patients refuse to talk to him, as if they sense he is not one of them, and he feels threatened by them. The doctors devote little time to the patients, the nurses are downright aggressive, and the medications he is given leave him feeling very dazed. To make matters worse, Dr. Ziemiński suddenly dies... I also recommend watching the play of the same title, based on Głębski’s book.
