The first sentence is always the hardest—as Wisława Szymborska used to say. We’ve got that out of the way, so let’s get down to business. Forman’s film is an excellent blend of the work of Ken Kesey, a nonconformist American writer, based on whose book it was made, with the intellectualism characteristic of Czech directors, including Forman. The mix is rounded out by the superb performances of Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher.  Patrick McMurphy (Nicholson), an inmate at a maximum-security facility, is sent for observation to a state psychiatric hospital. The convict feigns illness, treating his stay at the clinic like a vacation. However, he encounters a worthy opponent—Nurse Ratched (Fletcher), who effectively runs the entire ward. A conflict begins. Patrick becomes the leader of the patients, rallying them against the ward supervisor—who, under the guise of embodying calm and kindness, is actually a person who hates it when things don’t go her way and loves to psychologically abuse patients in their moments of greatest weakness. Which values will prevail? See for yourselves. A film about a psychiatric hospital, but above all about freedom and the totalitarianism that threatens it. A film that everyone should watch.
