Doctor at sea

21 November 2012
Original title: Doctor at Sea Country and year: United Kingdom, 1955 Genre: comedy Director: Ralph Thomas Screenplay: Jack Davies, Richard Gordon, Nicholas Phipps Cast: Dirk Bogarde, Brigitte Bardot, Joan Sims, Geoffrey Keen Medical theme: the life of a young doctor Description: *Doctor at Sea* is another film adaptation of one of Richard Gordon’s books, titled *Doctor at Sea*, from the *Doctor* series. This time, the main character decides to take a job as a ship’s doctor for a very trivial and, once again, not particularly lofty reason: namely, he wants to escape the boredom of daily life at St. Swithin’s Hospital in London. He becomes a medical officer on the small ship "Lotus" and, from the very beginning, gets caught up in all sorts of adventures. One of the main storylines is also a romance with the French singer Hélène Colbert, played by the beauty of that era, Brigitte Bardot. The medical plot is given short shrift, as it is limited to the captain’s simple stomach ailments or seasickness, but as a comedy showing the life of a young doctor from a slightly different, less serious angle, it works perfectly, just like the previous installment, *The Family Doctor*.
