29 December 2012
Original title: BiutifulProduction and year: Spain, Mexico, 2010 Genre: Drama Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu Cast: Javier Bardem Medical theme: Cancer Description: Uxbal is a single father raising two children. His life is filled with misfortune. Mambra, his wife, is an alcoholic and smoker who cheats on Uxbal with his brother. To make a living, the man must engage in illegal activities—drug dealing, organizing work for undocumented immigrants, and bribing police officers. Despite this, he does his best to help those in need. His mundane daily life is turned upside down by a diagnosis—terminal cancer—and statistics indicating that Uxbal has only a month left to live. He therefore tries to put his life in order and save as much money as possible for his children, but his actions lead to further disasters. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the categories of Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Foreign Language Film. The film lays bare reality in a very brutal way. It’s two hours of unrelenting sadness, and I don’t think everyone will be able to sit through it. It is definitely not light entertainment.
