Saving Hope

Country and year: Canada, 2012 Originaltitle: Saving HopeGenre: DramaCast: Erica Durance, Michael Shanks, Daniel Gilles
Description: Another series in which we meet a group of doctors who work together at the same hospital. This time, the main character is a young, ambitious surgeon, Alex Reid. Everything in her life is going perfectly—until her fiancé is involved in an accident on their wedding day. After the accident, he remains in a coma, lying in one of the wards at Hope Zion, where Alex works.
In addition to the main character, the series also follows the story of her ex-boyfriend, orthopedic surgeon Joel, her colleague—also a surgeon—and psychiatrist Gavin. Another intriguing subplot involves a relationship within the hospital between neurosurgeon Shahir and nurse Victor.
The most intriguing part, however, is what happens to Alex’s fiancé, who remains in a coma. Although he is unable to speak or move, his spirit wanders throughout the hospital, conversing with other comatose patients and even influencing certain events. He even makes desperate attempts to contact Alex, though these are, of course, largely unsuccessful.
The show as a whole is similar to many other series where the characters’ personal lives take precedence over medical storylines. I definitely appreciate the well-defined characters and humorous elements. I can probably only recommend it to fans of the genre.
