Sister Hawthorne

3 July 2012
Original title: Hawthorne Production and year: USA, 2009–2011 Genre: Drama Cast: Jada Pinkett Smith, David Julian Hirsh, Hannah Hodson, Michael Vartan Medical theme: Nursing Other information: 3 seasons, 30 episodes Description: The series is set in the present day, first at Richmond Trinity Hospital and then at James River Hospital in Richmond. The main character is head nurse Christina Hawthorne, a single mother raising a rebellious teenage daughter; however, she considers caring for the sick to be her true life’s mission. That is why she is always fighting for her patients’ lives, often even when there is not the slightest chance of success. In the first episode, Christina, gazing at her husband’s urn, marks the first anniversary of his death. However, she is suddenly called to the hospital because one of her patients, David, who has been battling cancer for years, decides to commit suicide. Christina tries to talk him out of it. To no avail. She also tries to help nurse Ray Stein, who administered too high a dose of insulin to a patient. Now he’s in serious trouble not only with his superiors but also with the law, as the patient’s parents want to sue him. The series was created three years ago and quickly won over TV audiences across the ocean, but on our side of the pond, it hasn’t achieved much success. In my opinion, this was due to the series’ lack of a clear direction, as it lacks either dynamic action, greater drama, or even dark humor with a dose of interesting dialogue. Despite this, the adventures of the resourceful and unyielding Christina are easy to watch.
