Title: Marked: Africa and AIDS
The book is a moving reportage by Gazeta Wyborcza journalist Adam Leszczyński. The journalist presents readers with a grim picture of the lives of Africans affected by the AIDS epidemic. He tells the stories of sex workers and their clients, truck drivers, politicians, doctors, and children, all of whom share one thing in common—a severe, debilitating disease that is difficult to admit to. Vivid and moving descriptions are complemented by black-and-white photographs. The book also includes scholarly notes describing the disease, its modes of transmission, and the search for effective treatments. I believe this is a book worth reading. It explains many of the cultural and social aspects of this disease to Western readers.
