Simon Beckett "Whispers of the Dead"
9 August 2010
Author: Simon Beckett
Title: Whispers of the Dead
Genre: Medical thriller
Description: The main character, David Hunter, is a forensic anthropologist. At the invitation of his former teacher, he leaves England for Tennessee, where the Center for Forensic Anthropology, known as the Corpse Farm, is located. Research on the decomposition of corpses is conducted on its grounds. Scientists, taking into account various external factors—including air temperature and humidity, as well as the location where the body was left—whether on the surface, in the soil, or in water—assess how and over what period of time the decomposition of a human body occurs.
During David’s stay in the area, a gruesome murder is committed. Soon, more people are killed, including a psychologist and the wife of one of the doctors involved in the investigation. The police are doing everything they can to find the perpetrator before he commits further crimes.
At his mentor’s request, David Hunter also decides to help. However, memories of last year’s investigation, which nearly cost him his life, make it difficult for him to work effectively. Will he agree to be bait for the killer despite his paralyzing fear?
I also highly recommend Simon Beckett’s *The Chemistry of Death* and *In the Bones*—just as gripping!
