Robin Cook "Signs of Life"

8 September 2010
Author: Robin Cook Original title: Vital Signs First edition: 1990 Medical topic: in vitro fertilization Description: Robin Cook. And that says it all. Another medical bestseller, this time focusing on in vitro fertilization and tuberculosis. A strange combination at first glance? Not for Robin Cook. Get ready for a journey through IVF clinics scattered across the globe, the intertwining of business and medical ventures, and the clash of traditional Chinese medicine with the ever-present pursuit of profit. The protagonist of *Signs of Life* is Marissa Blumenthal, a 33-year-old pediatrician struggling with infertility due to blocked fallopian tubes. What is disturbing, however, is the cause of this blockage... It turns out there are many more patients like Marissa. At first, she tries to reach out to them, examine their cases, and bring them together. The book is a page-turner; the resolution only becomes clear at the very end, after more than 300 suspenseful pages. The book is dedicated by the author to "countless couples exposed to the emotional and physical torment and suffering caused by infertility and modern attempts to treat it." I’ll add that this is the first book by Cook I’ve read, and it has encouraged me to read more of his works.
