Year of publication: 2000
Description:
A book by Miklos Nyiszli, a Hungarian Jewish doctor, describing his time at the Auschwitz camp during World War II.
The book addresses the genocide that took place at Auschwitz, the SS’s criminal experiments on prisoners, and certain other historical episodes from the camp’s operation—such as the Sonderkommando uprising or the camp’s evacuation—as seen through the eyes of a Jewish prisoner-doctor: an intelligent and sensitive observer.
I, the undersigned, Dr. Miklós Nyiszli, a physician and former prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp, declare that as a direct witness, employed in the crematorium and at the pyres of Birkenau, where the fire consumed millions of bodies of fathers, mothers, and children, I have written my account of this darkest chapter in human history in accordance with reality, unmotivated by any passion, without exaggeration or embellishment.
I can personally confirm that the book contains no exaggerated embellishments, emotional outbursts, or descriptions of the unfolding events steeped in sadness or regret. The author leaves much to the reader’s judgment. It is truly a concrete book. I highly recommend it.
