Andrzej Szczeklik "Kore. On Sickness, Disease, and the Search for the Soul of Medicine."

31 July 2011
Author: Andrzej Szczeklik Title: Kore. On the Sick, Diseases, and the Search for the Soul of Medicine. Year of publication: 2007 Description: Another collection of humanistic reflections by a renowned scholar. This time, he takes us on a journey in search of the soul of medicine, and above all, the role it plays in the healing process. Traversing the meanders of history, philosophy, and culture, and citing numerous anecdotes and examples, the author, as usual, impresses with his erudition and draws attention to the vital importance of the relationship between the doctor—who should not only heal the body but also ensure that we do not feel alone in our illness—and the patient, the suffering individual. In this regard, a holistic approach to the patient plays a key role in therapy, which is, after all, a creative process that makes medicine a field of art. An undeniable strength of the book is that it draws attention to aspects of medicine whose existence we might never have realized. Furthermore, Szczelik fosters an atmosphere of intellectual unity with the reader; he does not put on airs, even though his knowledge is impressive. I highly recommend reading it!
