Title: A Surgeon’s Diary: The Great Patriotic War 1941–1945
Genre: memoir, diary Medical
topic: military medicine, surgery
Year of first publication: 1967
Description: Does anyone know or remember which Great War this refers to?
I rarely have the opportunity to read history told from a different perspective, and it is worth looking at the “Soviet people’s war against the German-fascist invaders” through the eyes of a Soviet military doctor, surgeon, and general.
His notes, which were apparently written on the fly, are full of details and dry facts, but also vivid, raw medicine. War and surgery are inseparable, and the author doesn’t hide this from the reader. The book helps you “feel” what the everyday life of a doctor was like during those turbulent times. And although there is a slight hint of propaganda, one cannot deny the authenticity and sincerity of *The Diary...*.
I recommend it to surgeons, history enthusiasts, and best of all, those who enjoy both.
