Title: Medical Mysteries Authors: Ann Reynolds, Kenneth Wapner Publication Year: 2012 Description: *Medical Mysteries* is a book based on a documentary series originally produced for the American network ABC, which showcased the most astonishing and, at the same time, extremely rare disorders and diseases. As one might easily guess, this book is a collection of the most extraordinary stories of the series’ protagonists, and like most American-style publications, it follows a classic formula: a shocking story—its pseudoscientific or simplified explanation—a touch of humor—a more or less happy ending. The light, unadorned language makes the book a quick read, though it also becomes its true bane. The experiences and reflections of those affected by the described conditions are presented in a manner reminiscent of middle-school essays. There is a lack of genuine feelings and emotions here; the impersonality of the characters in the individual stories reduces them to nothing more than a collection of curiosities, somewhat stripped of their humanity. This does not mean the book should be dismissed outright. Despite its highly objective nature, it is written in an accessible, popular science style that draws you in, encourages you to share the knowledge and insights gained with friends, and certainly resonates more with people not involved in medicine on a daily basis. It must be admitted, however, that compared to other medical publications, it pales in comparison. Perfect for reading on the tram, bus, or while waiting in line at the doctor’s office.
