Theme: The Life of a Young Doctor
England, 17th century. Robert Merivel and John Pierce are two friends studying medicine. One day, Robert is summoned to the royal palace. The king asks Merivel to cure his favorite dog, Lulu. In gratitude for his services, Charles II invites him to court, where the doctor leads a life of comfort and dignity befitting his station. The situation becomes complicated when the king orders him to marry one of the ladies-in-waiting, one of his many
The viewer witnesses the rise and fall of a young doctor who makes a fortune only to lose it just as quickly, betrays his calling only to take it up again at the decisive moment, and chases after love only to find it in the least expected place and time. Dramatic historical events unfold in the background: the turbulent reign of Charles II and the plague epidemic. I won’t reveal anything more, but I will say that, aside from the gripping plot, the film’s greatest strength lies in the compelling performances by Meg Ryan and Robert Downey Jr.
