This is a biographical drama depicting the story of Lili Elbe—one of the world’s first transgender women. The story begins in Copenhagen in 1926. The artist, Gerda Wegener, painted her husband, Einar Wegener, portraying him as a woman. The painting gained popularity, and Einar began to identify more and more with the female gender. He began wearing women’s clothing and a wig more and more often. Eventually, with his wife’s support, he decides to undergo gender reassignment surgery—a pioneering procedure at the time, one that had never been successfully performed before. Will the couple’s love withstand this ordeal?
This is a truly moving story that portrays the joys and sorrows of a person with gender dysphoria.
