Get sick in the US (Sicko)

12 March 2010
Production and year: USA 2007 Genre: documentary, mockumentary Director: Michael Moore Screenplay: Michael Moore Cinematography: Christoph Vitt Description: Following Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, this documentary by Moore presents an extremely subjective, even demagogic, view of the state of modern healthcare in the United States, compared to Canada, France, the UK, and even Cuba! While the filmmaker was highly critical of his own country—exposing all the flaws of the U.S.-made healthcare system—the segments in the second half of the film, particularly those set in Europe, paint an overly idyllic picture of those nations. You have to watch Moore’s work closely, distinguishing the grotesque, populism, and indoctrination from reality. However, it’s truly worth it; I highly recommend it. An unforgettable scene: Star Wars-style text, accompanied by the appropriate background music: “If you have these conditions, you can’t have insurance,” followed by a very long list of diseases—cut off after “G”—that prevent you from signing a health insurance contract in the United States.
