City of Joy (City of Joy)

12 March 2010
Country and year: USA 1992 Genre: Drama Director:Roland Joffé Screenplay, music, cinematography: Mark Medoff, Richard Blackford, Peter Biziou Description: A young surgeon (Patrick Swayze) travels to India to forget his professional failures and medicine. He ends up in Calcutta, where he meets an Irish woman setting up a hospital for the poor. Max initially resists helping out at the hospital as a doctor, but later finds a passion in it and returns to his profession. I think the story is somewhat biased, but it can still be moving. As far as I’m concerned, a huge strength of the film is its excellent portrayal of the sad and difficult reality in Indian slums. The daily struggle for survival, standing up to mobsters, and, on the other hand, the joy of life.
