The elephant man (The elephant Man)

4 November 2012
Country of origin and year: USA, UK, 1980 Original title: The Elephant Man Genre: drama, biographical Director: David Lynch Screenplay: Stuart Craig, David Lynch, Eric Bergren, Christopher De Vore Cast: Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, and others Medical condition: Proteus syndrome   Description: England, 1884. Surgeon Dr. Frederick Treve (Hopkins) stumbles upon an extremely deformed man, John Merrick, at a fair, where he is being exhibited as the "Elephant Man." He decides to investigate this extraordinary medical case more closely. Over time, he discovers that his patient’s physical deformity is not accompanied by mental deformity. A story based on true events. The film’s John Merrick is the famous Victorian-era Joseph Carey Merrick, who most likely suffered from Proteus syndrome. The film vividly depicts how people with disabilities were treated just a few centuries ago. We follow the drama of a man who must come to terms with his difference. The initial distaste, caused by Merrick’s unpleasant appearance, is redirected, as the film progresses, toward the vulgar crowd watching the “freak.” A great film—its 8 Oscar nominations speak for themselves.
