theme: the life of a young doctor
Description: The film is set at St. Swithin’s Hospital in London, where three newly graduated doctors begin their residency, including the main character, Simon Sparrow. The film was made in the 1950s and shows us the realities of that era, when medical graduates didn’t necessarily feel a calling to the profession but were, in a sense, predestined to pursue such studies due to family roots, background, etc. Instead of focusing on helping patients, the three young doctors engage in fleeting relationships with women, go wild in sports cars, and indulge in life’s other pleasures. But not for long. When the chief physician of St. Swithin’s Hospital, Sir Lancelot Spratt, reminds them of their true purpose. The film is enjoyable to watch, and although it isn’t a major box office hit, in this case that’s actually a big plus. Especially recommended if you enjoy slightly older, low-key cinema.
