Wonderful Hands: The Story of Ben Carson

3 January 2013
Original title: Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson StoryCountry and year: USA, 2009 Genre: Drama Cast: Cuba Gooding Jr. Medical topic: Neurosurgery Description: Does a Black boy who gets straight Fs in school, who is raised by his mother alone along with his brother—and who, to make matters worse, is not particularly well-off—have a chance to become a great doctor? This is precisely the question addressed by the film "The Miracle Worker." It tells the story of Benjamin Solomon Carson, one of the world’s most famous neurosurgeons, who pioneered hemispherectomy as a treatment for epilepsy in children and performed surgery to separate conjoined twins joined at the head. The film is based on an autobiographical book of the same title, which I unfortunately haven’t had the chance to read. However, I’ve come across opinions that many of the storylines in the book were omitted from the film adaptation, which makes it even more interesting than the movie. "Miracle Hands" is a television production made on a modest budget. The most famous member of the cast is Cuba Gooding Jr., the 1997 Oscar winner. However, the story itself, which served as the basis for the screenplay, is enough to make the film a delight. I personally really liked it and definitely recommend it to everyone.
