M*A*S*H

21 November 2011
Production and year: USA, 1972–1983 Genre: war, comedy Creator: H. Richard Hornberger Cast: Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, Mike Farrell, Larry Linville, Loretta Swit Medical theme: field hospital, military medicine Other information: 11 seasons, 251 episodes; MASH = Mobile Army Surgical Hospital Description: This cult series tells the story of an American field hospital during the Korean War in the 1950s. What doctor would want to go on a mission into the heart of an armed conflict? The team assembled for this task consists entirely of colorful characters. There’s a group of resolute surgeons who are always cracking jokes, a perpetually grumpy commander, a female doctor whom the entire unit has a crush on, a childish corporal struggling with his insecurities, a medic who wears women’s clothing to be considered mentally ill, and a good-natured chaplain who is terrified of war. In addition to its unique humor (sometimes dark) and a cast of unforgettable characters, the series also stood out from others with its unique approach to war. Laughter turns out to be one of the best psychological defenses against the omnipresent cruelty and fear of death. And the fate of this American base in the heart of the jungle makes it clear that healthcare in wartime is not just about treating wounds, but above all about constantly instilling hope in the hearts of patients. A must-watch.
