Marcus Welby, medical doctor

9 July 2012
Original title: Marcus Welby, M.D. Production and year: USA, 1969–76. Genre: Drama . Cast: Robert Young, James Brolin, Elena Verdugo. Medical focus: Family medicine . Additional information: 7 seasons, 171 episodes Description: The series is set in a private practice in Santa Monica, California, and is the first production of its kind to shift the action from a hospital to a suburban clinic. The main characters are two doctors: Marcus Welby, a family physician, and his younger assistant, Steven Kiley, who differ not only in age but also in their approach to patients. Despite his age, Dr. Welby is less orthodox and prudish in his approach to patients than his younger assistant; he also serves as a mentor to him, teaching him how to treat patients. He strives to treat patients individually, as unique individuals, which was unheard of in that era when doctors treated patients as mere objects. Each episode highlights the generational gap between the doctors; for example, Dr. Kiley rides a motorcycle, while Dr. Welby drives a long, luxurious sedan.'Marcus Welby, M.D.' won numerous awards and gained many fans overseas due to its innovative approach to the subject matter for its time. The series was never broadcast in Poland, but I can honestly recommend it to those who enjoy shows with this kind of "old-school" vibe, as it’s worth making the effort to watch at least a few episodes.
