Hart of Dixie

17 July 2012
Original title: Hart of Dixie Country of origin and year: USA, 2011 Genre: drama, comedy Cast: Rachel Bilson, Jaime King, Scott Porter, Cress Williams Medical focus: family medicine Additional information: 1 season, 22 episodes (another 22 planned) Description: Hart of Dixie is a classic tale of a small-town clash with the big city. A go-getter doctor from New York, after a failed attempt to become a heart surgeon like her father, is sent to a backwater in Alabama, where young women dressed in period costumes dance at patriotic dances. Of course, the writers’—and thus the viewers’—sympathies lie with the town. To quote one of the characters: Bluebell is, after all, a place where neighbors look out for one another, and a parade is held every third Tuesday of the month. It’s also clear from the start that Dr. Zoe Hart, despite conflicts and various twists and turns, will eventually be accepted by the local community. It is not innovation that draws viewers to this series, but rather a tried-and-true concept and a slightly old-fashioned atmosphere.Hart of Dixie is a typical bittersweet production, but both the sweetness and the bitterness are served in moderation. The producers didn’t force the script to be overly complicated; they simply stick to the rules of the genre, knowing that the charming town of Bluebell will sell itself. Thanks to this, they’ve created a series that, compared to other contemporary shows, feels fresh and unpretentious. The first episode is, in short, a preview of the entire season. Hart of Dixie is a charming little story where even the local beauty queen is a good girl at heart, and it all takes place against the backdrop of Alabama’s lush natural scenery.
