Laryngeal tuberculosis in 64-year old patient

Laryngeal tuberculosis in 64-year old patient

Tuberculosis is a relatively common disease. Its incidence has decreased in recent years due to the the introduction of anti-tuberculosis therapy, increased standards of living and awareness among the population. Primary tuberculosis of the larynx is very rare, more often appearing as a secondary disease in the course of tuberculosis of the lungs. Primary TB accounts for less than 1% of all extrapulmonary forms of the disease. The main symptoms are hoarseness, a dry, irritating cough and a weakened voice.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis - when an exaggerated immune response escapes control mechanisms

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis - when an exaggerated immune response escapes control mechanisms

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a syndrome resulting from an exaggerated inflammatory reaction. HLH can be triggered by a variety of congenital and acquired factors. The most common symptoms of HLH are persistent fever, splenic enlargement and cytopenias in the peripheral blood. Laboratory findings include hyperferritinemia (often >10000 μg/L) and elevated levels of soluble receptor for interleukin-2. Without appropriate treatment, HLH leads usually to the death of the patient.
